I have read this book twice, separated by a couple of decades. From the first time to now I have grown in experience and wisdom. I have read more. In experience, I have lived and worked with Native Americans. I know them better than I did before. This book gets ***** because I feel that it's expression of Native American culture is sensitive and sublime. It's more than just the stories.
Even children will be enthralled with these Native American tales.Wonderful and thought provoking. Will lead you back toBURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE, Brown's masterpiece.
I think the only reason why I read this was because, when I was a teenager, I was interested in Native American mythology. Granted, I wasn't that interested ,but it was there. I just didn't enjoy it because, I don't like stories where the stories succeed to little to no effort and villains aren't that clever. However, there's one story I did like. The only story that I like was with the crow and hawk. Considering Hawk was kind enough to watch the eggs, they should've gotten the kids. What makes me think that even more is the story explain how the issue. It was sad to see Crow cry, but if she told Eagle that she forgot her kids, she'd loose her chance. There are two stories that made me a little upset. The first story was Why Dogs Have Long Tongues. Until the man began to punish his dog, I didn't mind it. At that point, I told myself ,"Are these people supposed to respect nature? This makes me a little suspicious." The other story was with Heavy Collar and the ghost. I understood why the ghost was vengeful, but I couldn't feel any empathy for her when she started to smoke a whole tribe. If she didn't try to murder children, I would've been fine with the whole fiasco. It didn't help the ghost said they're all no better than dogs. Then again, I guess having a 'Holier-Than-Thou' attitude makes any action easier.
These stories have the fun, lessons, and morals that make you want to memorize them for the next time you're around a campfire. They're great, because like most tales, they can be summarized in two sentences, yet with the expansion of narrative detail you can imagine yourself in an old council ring with an elder speaking slowly, and dozens of children listening in amazement. The stories are quite short, quick to read, and very entertaining.
